Body Scientific has designed an anatomy textbook for today’s learners — Engaging, inclusive, informative, and representative.

For twenty years, Body Scientific has created medical illustrations for many leading anatomy textbooks. Now, for the first time, we’ve brought all that experience together into our own textbook.

Designed for high school and college-level learners, this new anatomy reference provides a visually engaging journey through 13 major body systems, providing foundational anatomy and basic physiology. The text reflects current educational best practices by removing traditional anatomical eponyms and replacing them with descriptive, function-based terminology. Inclusive, gender-aware language is used where appropriate, ensuring the material is clear, modern, and accessible to today’s students and educators.

Tennis player illustration showing bone shapes: long, short, flat, irregular, and sesamoid. Background has text and bone diagrams.
Illustration of bone shapes in the human skeleton, demonstrating their unique forms and functions. The diagram distinguishes between flat, long, irregular, short, and sesamoid bones, highlighting examples like the sternum, humerus, vertebrae, carpals, and patella, with an integrated representation of a tennis player.

Chapters Include:

  • Chapter 1: Organization of the Human Body

  • Chapter 2: Integumentary System

  • Chapter 3: Skeletal System

  • Chapter 4: Muscular System

  • Chapter 5: Cardiovascular System

  • Chapter 6: Lymphatic System

  • Chapter 7: Nervous System

  • Chapter 8: Digestive System

  • Chapter 9: Respiratory System

  • Chapter 10: Sensory System

  • Chapter 11: Endocrine System

  • Chapter 12: Urinary System

  • Chapter 13: Genital System

At the heart of this project is representation.

Diversity in medical imagery is often limited. This book reflects our commitment to feature people of color in anatomy. For students who identify with these representations, it offers the opportunity to see themselves reflected in scientific learning; for others, it provides meaningful exposure to human diversity presented with accuracy and respect. This approach encourages thoughtful dialogue, supports equitable learning environments, and contributes to greater balance in diversity and representation within anatomy education.

Inclusive and representative.

This publication reflects the vision, leadership, and collaboration of many dedicated individuals. We gratefully acknowledge Marcelo Oliver, whose creative direction and lifelong commitment to medical illustration shaped the foundation of this work, and Dr. Saadiq El-Amin, whose scientific leadership ensured clinical accuracy and educational integrity throughout.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Lead Subject Matter ExpertsDr. Ernest F. Talarico, Jr., PhD; Dr. Melissa A. Carroll, MS, PhD; Dr. Nanette Briers, PhD; and Dr. Hope Gangata, EdD—for their rigorous review, scholarly insight, and guidance. Their contributions were instrumental in strengthening the scientific depth, clarity, consistency, and inclusivity of this text.

We are also deeply thankful to the Contributing Subject Matter Experts, whose diverse expertise and perspectives further enhanced the accuracy, relevance, and global scope of this publication. Together, these collaborators made it possible to create an anatomy resource that is scientifically sound, visually engaging, and representative of the diverse human experience.

Illustration of muscle structure from tendon to sarcomere, with labeled parts: fascia, epimysium, muscle fibers. Text explains functions.
Detailed illustration of muscle structure, showing the progression from tendon to sarcomere. The image highlights key components such as the epimysium, perimysium, fascicles, muscle fibers, and sarcomeres, providing a comprehensive view of how muscles are organized and connected.

This book would not be possible without the exceptional skill, dedication, and creativity of the medical illustrators who brought its content to life. Anatomy is inherently a visual science, and without their ability to translate complex anatomical structures into clear, accurate, and engaging imagery, this work could not be fully visualized or understood. Their collaboration with subject matter experts ensured scientific precision, visual clarity, and inclusive representation throughout the text. We gratefully acknowledge their essential role in transforming knowledge into imagery that educates, clarifies, and inspires learners.
